As you already know, I am a huge fan of Guy Ritchie’s body of work as a film director, so I was WAITING for this one. Sherlock Holmes does not disappoint one bit. Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic in the role and I have to say Jude Law (whom I don’t really care for other than his role in The Talented Mr. Ripley) was sensational as Dr. Watson! He actually had some of the best scene stealing lines in the film. The biggest thing for me was that Downey and Law had a LOT of chemistry, they honestly seemed like you would believe they were actually that close.
As for the directing, Ritchie does an amazing job of capturing turn of the century London in that gritty, grey working class sort of way. He also employed some of the camera tricks that made him famous in “Snatch” like the slow motion action fight scenes, and the third person narration of the characters thoughts (hearing what they are thinking). Also, I do really appreciate that the version that we see in the film is much closer to the literary version of Holmes instead of the bumbling Detective of the famed BBC series. Downey plays him moreso like an..”absent minded professor“. He is obviously brilliant but he also obviously has many many issues that sometimes detract from or add to that brilliance. The main villain in this story is Lord Blackwood, played very smarmily by Mark Strong who is a frequent cast member on Guy Richie’s sets (Rocknrolla, Revolver). The mystery unravels in a little over 2 hours (yes, it is long but very action packed…the time flies by) and Holmes of course gets his man. It’s got a bit of something for everyone…action, comedy, mystery, plot twists with just a dash of unrequited romance. Guys and girls alike will like the fight scenes and everybody will get a kick out of Holmes & Watson outsmarting everybody.
