Let’s just put that Madonna thing to the side shall we? We all know that she never gets involved with anyone unless they are, a) smarter than she is… or b) extremely talented. Trust and believe, Madonna is no dummy. Ever the perennial student, it would make sense that she would gravitate towards people she could learn from. Guy Ritchie is one of those people. Gotta hand it to her, she certainly can spot talent. So superstar ex-wife aside, Guy Ritchie is in a word amazing. Sometimes his quest to be “arty” and “different” can turn some people off (there is a scene in Rocknrolla where a junkie has a flashback and in the flashback there is a slow motion withdrawal scene that I could have done without) BUT…I ignored it and kept watching because Rocknrolla is a GREAT film and ultimately Ritchie kept me engaged.
He had a cult hit with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which was a great film, one that got everyone (including Madonna) looking at him. He has a few themes in his films, he likes to work with the same actors, loads of fighting, possibly guns and oh yeah it usually involves some kind of criminal activity. Let’s look at the breakout vehicle for him, 2000′s Snatch, first mainstream American film. A big movie by his standards, an Oscar winner in the cast and an almost unintelligible Brad Pitt (tip, if you haven’t seen it…you must and turn ON the subtitles). The story was a bit dis-jointed (no more so than Pulp Fiction) BUT funny and stellar directing on Ritchie’s part. Now, the whole reason why I think it’s taken him a while to come back is unfortunately the Madonna factor. He did a movie with her, 2002′s Swept Away (which wasn’t even really all that bad but her reputation as box office poison precedes her). His fans hated the idea and that was that. He still worked, put out a few films over the years that were great but none with the buzz and starpower of Snatch. Films like Revolver, Suspect and the aforementioned Rocknrolla (which if you can’t tell…I loved) with the gorgeous duo of Gerard Butler and Idris Elba. I watched the film several times just to look at the two of them. It seemed that he would be relegated to be the small indie director that everyone wanted to work with forever. Then came the news that he would be directing a big studio film.
Now….comes the resurgence. This Christmas…Ritchie directs Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey, Jr., a huge film, even HUGER budget and action galore. I can’t wait as I love RDJ….another brilliantly underrated actor (well not so much anymore since Iron Man, but that was his “Sherlock Holmes” his resurgence). Ritchie will be unstoppable if this film does well…and do well I am certain it will. Let’s hope that he doesn’t lose his edge along with it.
