Last night, we lost one of the patriarchs of American History. Ted Kennedy passed away last night from complications of brain cancer, he was 77. I do believe that he is the ONLY male of the Kennedy clan not to die of some tragic accident. I could be wrong….
The Kennedy family have been like our royals, Hyannis Port has become our Windsor castle. All American, patriotic, good looking and truly scandalous. To read a Kennedy memoir is like reading a trashy novel….so many staggeringly amazing achievements (many families never see ONE let alone several), and so many tragedies. So many that they have a name for it…..”The Kennedy Curse“. I can only imagine what it would be like to lose a sibling that you are extremely close to, the to have it happen again and again, then your nephew and so on and so on. Just fraught with tragedy from every direction.
And then there was his drinking and that whole Chappaquiddick thing….which was a spectacular tragedy on all levels. He simply brushed himself off….and kept it moving. Like many of the Kennedy Clan, I suppose he just became used to it…or numb. He went on to become a successful and important United States Senator who authored more than 2,500 bills. Of those bills, several hundred have become Public Law, which have made a significant difference in the quality of life for the American people. He championed causes like Civil Rights, Health Care, HIV/AIDS, Bio Terrorism, Education, Unemployment…the list goes on and on. While not everybody will agree with his politics, those are all significant causes to champion that affect the greater good of this nation Republican or Democrat. He was even a driving force in getting our current President elected. Even when he was deathly ill, he found the time to campaign….it was just in his blood.
So, Mr. Kennedy…..I salute you and all that you have done to further America and make it a better place….
